Ralph Ignatius Thomas Alles is a Sri Lankan educationalist. He served as the State Secretary for Ministry of Education from 1989 to 1993 and is currently the Chairman of the Gateway Group. He was the founding principle of D. S. Senanayake College.

Family

Married to Rohini Alles who is also a teacher at Royal College Colombo, they had three sons Tiran, Harsha & Malik. Tiran Alles is a leading businessmen, politician in the country, married to Lydia Alles and Dr Harsha Alles is a medical doctor turned cooperate executive in the Gateway Group, married to Dinali Alles. His youngest son, Malik Alles died at the age 17 due to a sporting accident at his alma mater D.S. Senanayake College.

Education

R. I. T. Alles was educated his primary education at St. Aloysius’ College, Galle and secondary education at St. Anthony’s College, Kandy.

Career

Alles started his career as a teacher, eventually becoming an assistant principal at Royal College Colombo in Colombo, the leading public school in Sri Lanka, and helped to establish D. S. Senanayake College in 1967, becoming its first principal. In 25 years at the school, he helped turn it into one of the leading schools in Sri Lanka, expanding from 167 students to over 5000. There after he established the Gateway International School which is today the Gateway College and Gateway Group.
