He was born Robin Thomas Grossman in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. His best-known television roles are as Mark Singleton in the soap opera Another World (1983–85), and as Geoffrey Wells on the 1980s series Who’s the Boss?. He has also had recurring roles in series such as Murphy Brown (as Jake Lowenstein), Matlock (as a prosecutor), Life Unexpected (as Lux Cassidy’s paternal grandfather, Jack Bazile) and The Division (as Louis Perillo).

Thomas’s best-known film roles were as Steve Carlson in the 1986 film About Last Night… and as Vice Principal Phil Gills in the 1987 comedy Summer School. Thomas has made many guest appearances on TV shows, including Misfits of Science, Midnight Caller, Party of Five, and Queer as Folk.

Two of his biggest screen roles were in Missing Brendan, with Edward Asner, and Ambulance Girl, in which he co-starred with Kathy Bates and Gordon Pinsent.

After obtaining a BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, Thomas moved to NYC. He spent his early years in New York as a sculptor, creating kinetic works employing plexiglass, stainless steel, teflon, water, oil, air, pumps, motors, and lights. His works were exhibited at The Huntsville Museum of Art, The Three Rivers Arts Festival, The Westchester Art Invitational, and various galleries in Soho. Thomas was twice invited by Gene Moore to create original pieces for all of Tiffany’s windows in NYC. To help pay for the cost of his sculpture, Thomas eventually formed a construction company. He built and designed a health food store in the East Village and lofts and apartments throughout New York City. He returned to acting at age 30.
