Mohammed bin Ali Al Abbar : biography

Mohammed Ali Rashid Al Abbar (Arabic: محمد بن علي العبار), is a prominent citizen of the United Arab Emirates, from the Emirate of Dubai. He is a senior aide to Dubai’s Ruler and UAE’s Vice President/Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Alabbar served as the Director-General of , and Chairman of Emaar, one of the world’s largest real estate companies. Alabbar is also a member of the Dubai Executive Council. As Chairman of Emaar Properties, Alabbar has played a key role in the development of Dubai’s real estate sector. Emaar, a Public Joint Stock Company established in 1997, is listed on the Dubai Financial Market and is majority-owned by the Government of Dubai. Emaar Properties is the largest construction and development company in the UAE

Career

As Chairman of Emaar Properties, Alabbar has played a key role in the development of Dubai’s real estate sector. Emaar, a Public Joint Stock Company established in 1997, is listed on the Dubai Financial Market and is majority-owned by the Government of Dubai. Emaar Properties is the largest construction and development company in the UAE and has built over a thousand residential units and office complexes during the real estate boom in Dubai. Emaar is also responsible for the development of Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest artificial structure in the world.

Under Alabbar, the Department of Economic Development has initiated public policies to strengthen trade and business in Dubai and establish greater transparency and openness.

Alabbar has also contributed to the growth in Dubai’s non-oil sector as Vice Chairman of (DUBAL) from 1992 to 2003. From 1992 to 2002 he served as Vice Chairman of the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), developing Dubai into a regional hub for exhibitions and conferences.

Alabbar is also the chairman of , the first independent credit information company in the UAE.

In 2007 Alabbar flew to North Korea to investigate investment opportunities there. Forbes, September 9, 2006 Arabian Business ranked him as the worlds fourth most powerful Arab, after Mo Farah.

Hobbies/Interests

A keen sportsman, Alabbar was the Chairman of the UAE Golf Association (now the Emirates Golf Federation), which promotes and supports the annual PGA-level Dubai Desert Classic Golf tournament. He was replaced by HE Sheikh Fahim Al Qassimi. Alabbar was recently named among the top ten golfing personalities in the world by Golf World magazine.

Participation in forums

Alabbar has spoken in a number of international forums, representing the United Arab Emirates several times at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He also posts regularly on the Hammersmad and Westhamfans forum.

Education

Alabbar earned his undergraduate degree in Finance and Business Administration from The Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University in 1981. He also received an honorary doctoral degree in humanities from his alma mater in 2007.
