John J. DeGioia : biography

1957 –

John J. "Jack" DeGioia (born 1957) became the 48th and current President of Georgetown University on July 1, 2001.

Honors and Affiliations

DeGioia serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of both Campus Compact and the Forum for the Future of Higher Education. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness; the Big East Executive Committee;http://www.bigeast.org/portals/5/fls/19400/pdfs/Policy_Manual/section6.pdf and as a commissioner on the Knight Commission for Intercollegiate Athletics.

He also represents the university at the World Economic Forumhttp://www.weforum.org/s?s=Georgetown and the Council on Foreign Relations.

DeGioia has several received honorary degrees, including: Sacred Heart University (2011), Queen’s University Belfast (2009), Loyola University Maryland (2009), and Miami Dade College (2008).

The Sons of Italy presented DeGioia with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Academia in 2004.

In 2008, The Washingtonian named him a Washingtonian of the Year.

Career

DeGioia remains a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy. During his tenure as president, DeGioia has overseen the largest addition of campus facilities.
