Business
In addition to his State Senate duties, Carona is director, CEO, and president of Associations, Inc. aka "Associa". Associa is a holding company for one of the largest collectionss of HOA management companies and related businesses in the United States. Carona has come under scrutiny for his business practices and his legislative activity including authoring, voting on, and modifying legislation that benefited his Associa organization.
Texas State Senate
First elected to the Texas Legislature in 1990, Carona is now in his fourth term in the Texas State Senate, representing District 16 in Dallas County. His current senate term runs through the end of the Eighty-first Texas Legislature in 2010. Previously, Carona was elected to three terms in the Texas House of Representatives.
Carona serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce and as a member of the Senate Criminal Justice, Education, Jurisprudence and Redistricting Committees.
In May 2012, acrimony between Carona and fellow Republican State Senator Dan Patrick was widely reported throughout Texas. In an email exchange, Patrick accused Carona of spreading false rumors about Patrick’s marriage; Carona denied that and additionally denied commenting on Patrick’s sexuality. Carona further said to Patrick: "I’ve never been shy about sharing my dislike and distrust of you. Put bluntly, I believe you are a snake oil salesman, a narcissist that would say anything to draw attention to himself." News reports suggest that the feud is in part motivated by positioning to succeed David Dewhurst as Texas Lieutenant Governor, should Dewhurst win a seat as U.S. Senator.
Personal life
Carona has been a resident of East Dallas since early childhood. He was educated in the Dallas Independent School District, graduating from Bryan Adams High School. He received bachelors of business administration degrees in insurance and real estate from The University of Texas at Austin in 1978 and currently serves as president of a Dallas-based, national real estate management firm.
