Last joke of Baron the Liar. Karl Friedrich Hieronymus, Freiherr von Munchhausen.

The baron von Munchhausen who was quite an inventor (he was also called the king of liars) was given his title and the whole world’s recognition due to his favorite pastime. When the baron grew old, he liked to visit a small cozy restaurant ‘The King of Prussia’ almost every evening. He came there, started to smoke his favorite pipe, ordered a glass of hot punch and then he began entertaining all the other visitors and regular customers of the restaurant with his amazing stories.

Indeed, Freiherr von Munchhausen did have much to remember! In his younger days he used to be in the army and he saw a lot of different thing at war. He saw how a ramrod, forgotten after the cleansing, went out of a rifle’s muzzle (as a matter of fact, the baron made up a story about shooting a whole flock of ducks with one such shot). It’s a historical fact that Prince Anthony Ulrich’s horse suffered from such accidental gunshot during inspection. Hieronymus von Munchhausen was at that time the Prince’s page. He lived several years in Russia, and he could see how the destiny of the whole Empire was being shaped. In fact, Freiherr von Munchhausen was a witness of lots of significant historical events. For example, he was given an honour to meet at the border a young German princess Sophie Friederike Auguste, the future Catherine the Great. During military coup, which happened because of Elisabeth, the heir to the throne, he as a military man guarded and protected Riga and the Braunshcweig family which was sent there. Several years later, he told frequent customers of the restaurant ‘The King of Prussia’ about his adventures and local hunting lovers. To tell the truth, he liked to colour the truth. A writer Rudolf Erich Raspe told the whole world these interesting partially truthful stories.

Baron the Liar had bad luck with his first wife and he lost his fortune because of her. A great deal of his friends and acquaintances turned aside from him since he had not a very trustful reputation of an inventor and a liar. By that time the books about Baron’s adventures had become a true bestseller. Last days of Hieronymus von Munchhausen were filled with poverty and solitude. But still fighting spirit and fantasy never left the famous Baron. It’s necessary to add that there was this German woman who took care of the Baron (most likely because of her curious nature). The woman was very eager to know why Baron was missing two toes. The housemaid collected all her bravery, came up him and started to shoot questions about Freiherr von Munchhausen’s life in the past. The King of Liars, lying on his deathbed, just couldn’t make himself admit that he simply got them frozen when he lived in Russia! Naturally, he made up his mind to tell a good joke one last time and so he said: ‘Once, when I was hunting, a huge polar bear bit my poor toes off!’
